CfBI’s latest headlines

 

With COVID well behind us now we are fully physical again – but still use the Hopin platform to enable members from around the world to participate virtually to network  and to pick up recordings of talks and discussion.

 

•       The Corporate Venturing Leadership Forum (CVLF-5)  has been busy over the past few months, with meetings in Canary Wharf, hosted by Kadans, and a recent trip to Food Valley in Wageningen, hosted by Yili. We discussed the latest problems for innovators, such as finding and working with start-ups, and integrating them into a corporate environment. We also explored how to build successful ecosystems. The trip to Food Valley gave us a valuable insight into the future of food and how corporates can work with start-ups to bring new products to market. We also had a tour of Yili's brand new state of the art labs - apparently regularly tested making pizza! •       (NEW) The Future of Education Consortium (FoE-1) is a dynamic community of forwardthinking policy makers, educators, technologists, and visionaries dedicated to shaping the future of education. We bring together public and private sector organisations from across Europe that are passionate about education and aspire to enhance student engagement, improve outcomes and foster lifelong learning by incorporating cutting-edge technologies. Together, we will redefine the boundaries of education and pioneer transformative learning experiences. We are currently inviting members to join this  new Consortium - our Consortium leaders will be attending the Cambridge Innovation Summit on 26th September ready to introduce the Consortium to anyone who's interested. We plan to launch on Sept 27^th.

•       The Microfluidics Consortium (MF-14) Having visited San Francisco (including site visit to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory), Zurich (including site visit to the de Mello Lab at ETH)  and Boston (including site visit to MIT nano lab)  this year, we will be in Cambridge UK (Trinity Science Park) on Sept 27^th  with a world class programme of research, applications and venturing talks, table top demos, site visits and all the networking you can handle!! . Following this we will meet in Paris, France on tbc Nov 20/21 (convenient for delegates at Medica the previous week)  and then in  San Francisco on Feb 1/2 (timed to fit with the Photonics West Conference).  For details, contact Peter Hewkin on ceo@cfbi.com

 

·         The Medical Adherence and Digital Health Consortium (MADH-7) takes a collaborative pan industry approach to the expensive problem of poor adherence to treatment regimes, and the opportunities presented by digital health to support increased adherence and patient engagement. Building on existing work in the sector, the group progresses through the use of focussed working groups, currently looking at; improving the use of behaviour change in digital health apps (creating an implementation framework in association with experts from Kings College London and Asthma + Lung UK): increasing the quality of adherence measurement: and agreeing and progressing along a feasible industrial roadmap to the better use of digital to improve adherence. The next meeting will be in Cambridge on Sept 27th following the Cambridge Innovation Summit. For details, contact Jeremy Holland at jeremy.holland@cfbi.com

•       The Nano-Carbon Enhanced Materials (NCEM-9) consortium has the mission to provide a unique inside into carbon nanotechnologies and an opportunity to address commercialisation challenges. Members are currently particularly interested in enabling materials and technologies for upcoming generations of batteries. The Cambridge Innovation Summit is the annual occasion when members of all our consortia come together to learn from and with each other. Supported by generous sponsorship from BSI (British Standards Institute) and CPI (Centre for Process Innovation) and now in its 9^th year CfBI’s flagship event will  be  in physical format  on Sept 26th 2022 (with a programme of case studies, panel discussions,  a curated matching session with leading start-ups  and all the networking you can handle. The Summit takes place  a beautiful Cambridge riverside location with a dinner afterwards in the Great Hall of Westminster College – just  a short walk along the river from the summit location. We are delighted to have headline speakers from Microsoft Research, ARM, Linguamatics  and University of Cambridge  already confirmed.  For those who cannot make the physical event the Advanced Hopin  features will be used to allow virtual breakout room discussions and ad-hoc 1-2-1 video meetings.  Access is free to all members of CfBI consortia – but there is a modest fee for non-members. MF 14 Microfluidics Consortium Meeting Cambridge UK September 27

 

Having been hosted by  Micronit, ETH Zurich, Broad Institute Boston and Stanford Uni in the past year - come and join us when the #Microfluidics Consortium Open Day takes place in Cambridge UK (Carefully timed to fit with the Cambridge Innovation Summit the same week)!

On September 27th We are at the Trinty Centre on the Cambridge Science Park with research and applications talks from thought leaders, hotseat pitches from early stage companies looking for partners, physical table-top demos from key vendors, Gala Dinner on the eveing of September 26 (for consortium members) at Westminster College Cambridge  and all the ‘face-to-face’ networking you can handle as well as (on Sthe afternoon of Sept 26 site visits to labs and company sites around the Cambridge area. Adding to the physical buzz, delegates can use the Hopin app on their phones to check out and message other delegates in the room and around the world as well.

As we reclaim the physical domain with our largest format so far including  research and applications talks from industry leaders, hotseat presentations from early stage companies looking for partners, physical table-top demos, a physical ‘mixer’  with our good friends from Bay Area Microfluidics Network, jobsboard  and  all the ‘face-to-face’ networking you can handle as well as (on Feb 3) site visits to labs and companies around the Bay. Adding to the physical buzz delegates can use the Hopin app on their phones to reach delegates around the world as well.

Microfluidics Global Expo - Oct 5th worldwise

 CfBI's Microfluidics Consortium is proud to bring you the Microfluidics Global EXPO - a rolling programme of talks, demos, jobs and networking for delegates around the world. It takes place on Oct 5th .. starting late afternoon in Australia and having passed thro Singapore and Europe we end up on the US West Coast early morning.

There will be phycial feeder meetings in Sydney, Paris, Cambridge and Boston organized by Consortium members streaming content into the EXPO.

The Microfluidics Consortium is returning to Boston on June 2 and 3  2022! We will be physically at the Boston Museum of Science (convenient for the Cambridge MA cluster - and with a skyline view over the Back Bay) and also virtually on Hopin.

Microfluidics Global Expo Sept 8th 2020

 Responding to Covid19 lockdown CfBI is 100% virtual these days! We have kept our consortium dates but are delivering these over Zoom. This has had some exciting side effects and we are delighted to welcome @Zeon from Japan and @BMF3D  into the MF11 consortium.

 

.. Now we are raising our game further by organizing  Microfluidics Global Expo  on Sept 8th. This is a virtual roadshow of demos and talks from the Microfluidics Consortium. We start in Singapore/Australia - move on to Europe / Africa and then hop over to the US finishing up in Seattle!

With speakers from all 5 continents this is truly an exhibition on which the sun never sets!

Silicon Valley Bank Sponsors 2019 Cambridge Innovation Summit

Silicon Valley Bank is delighted to have sponsored the third annual Cambridge Innovation Summit which took place on 9th July.

The Cambridge Innovation Summit brought together over 90 leading thinkers about innovation processes from businesses and other organisations across Europe and the USA. Delegates from all of the consortia run by the Cambridge-based Centre for Business Innovation (CfBI) and invited guests worked together on challenges and opportunities which they are experiencing in the innovation landscape.

The summit included a ‘Curated Startup Matching’ pre-event to Introduce inbound corporates to Cambridge startups and  scaleups organized with the St Johns’ Innovation Centre. There were sessions on ‘Global Innovation Processes’ (Chaired by Philip Guilford of the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering with discussion leaders from Amazon, Brightstar, DSTL and Jaguar Landrover), ‘Innovation with data’ (Chaired by James Boyles of Taylor Vinters with discussion leaders from  Amadeus Partners, Miotify, and HP Labs) and ‘Innovation Made in Cambridge’ (Chaired by Haroon Ahmed retired master of Corpus Christi College with cameo presentations from Astra Zeneca, ARM and Amazon), as well as  table-top demonstrations from a number of Cambridge-based innovators introduced by Alex McCracken of Silicon Valley Bank.

The world-class networking opportunity culminated with dinner in Trinity Hall addressed by Peter Cowley of Cambridge Angels  on the theme of ‘Why Cambridge for Innovation?’

On adjacent days CfBI consortia for ‘Open Innovation Meets Big Data’, ‘Medical Adherence/Digital Health’, ‘Nano-Carbon Enhanced Materials’ and ‘Corporate Venturing Leadership’ met in private sessions in the Cambridge region.

Alex McCracken from Silicon Valley Bank commented “it is pleasing to see large Corporates collectively discussing their innovation processes and engaging with technology startups in Cambridge. Corporates are increasingly partnering with startups, which helps to stimulate the UK ecosystem. From our research in 2018 Corporates participated in 42% of equity rounds of £10m-£200m roundsize in UK tech businesses” (data from Pitchbook).
